William Yong became the lead singer of 'Fundamental'. They performed in school concerts and won numerous competitions. Two radio DJs persuaded them to enter the Carlsberg Pop Music Festival band competition. 'Fundamental' won the 1st runner-up award and was signed by Current Records (latterly BMG Pacific Records). During their subsequent career they released 3 albums, 1 single and numerous compilations.'Fundamental' also won the bronze prize of best new artist award from HK Commercial Radio. The group disbanded when most of the members decided to leave Hong Kong and further their studies abroad.
